Gladys Irene Carmichael
Sept. 13, 1935 – June 27, 2025

Gladys Irene Carmichael (nee Briggs), died Friday, June 27, 2025.
Gladys was born on Sept. 13, 1935, in Brandon, Man., to Henry Briggs and Elizabeth Briggs (nee Long).

Gladys married John Fraser Carmichael, aka Sandy Carmichael, on Aug. 4, 1958, while Sandy was stationed at Shilo, Man. John and Gladys would move much of their early life together with Sandy’s military postings. It was during this time they welcomed John Scott Carmichael, while stationed in Brandon, Man., and David Kent Carmichael while stationed at Camp Gagetown, N.B. The Canadian Army had this little family moving around while Sandy completed his 25 years of service to Canada. They eventually settled, after traversing across Canada, in Edmonton after Sandy completed his service at Giesbair Base located in Edmonton. They would buy their home and settle in Edmonton.

Gladys was a homemaker, but also volunteered her time to the Girl Guides and taught new immigrants to Canada to read English. She loved to sew and garden. She made outfits for her grandchildren and some nieces. She loved to paint in addition to reading. She loved to travel and after Sandy retired from the City of Edmonton, they were able to travel and winter in Arizona.

Gladys is survived by her sons Scott and Kent and their wives Cheryl Fletcher and Karen Stueve; four grandchildren: David Carmichael, Sarah Stover, John-Duane Carmichael, and Andrew Carmichael (Caitlin); and five great-grandchildren: Es Michel, Vincent Carmichael, Edward Carmichael, Sabastian Stover and Gillian Carmichael, with numerous other children who called her great-grandma. She leaves behind her sister, Janet Gosman (David) in Fort Francis, Ont., and numerous nieces and nephews to mourn her death. She was predeceased by siblings: Grace Dean, sister, of Brandon, Man.; Kenneth Briggs, brother, of Brandon, Man.

Gladys was raised Baptist, went to Catholic High School, and raised her family in the United Church of which she was married.

A Christian service will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Rocky Mountain House on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, reception to follow in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice — as reading was a big part of her life and the teaching of reading to newcomers to Canada, perhaps something that promotes learning.

The family thanks the staff at Park Avenue assisted living for all the care and friendship they provided to Gladys over her many years here in Rocky Mountain House.
